The Mission: Help 1,000 People Find a Job Closer to Home

I want to help 1,000 people find a job that gives them more of their day back.

I want people to spend less time sitting in traffic, commuting home after a long day and wishing they had more time with their friends and family. One of the simplest ways to get some of that time back is by finding a job closer to home.

I’ve had incredibly long commutes in my life that I wouldn’t wish on anybody. I’ve spent hours a day, five days a week, sitting in traffic after an already long day at work. It’s exhausting, and it takes time away from the things and people you actually care about.

I want to help other people find jobs that fit their lives and the needs of their families.

A commute costs more than miles

The burden of a long commute is felt in almost every other part of your life.

There’s the time you spend traveling. There’s the cost of gas, maintenance, and keeping a reliable vehicle just so you can get to and from work. There’s the stress of getting home late after a long shift. And there’s the time with your family and friends that you don’t get back.

A shorter commute isn’t just about living five miles closer to work. It might mean a shorter drive, fewer transfers on public transit, a job you can safely walk or bike to, or simply a job that doesn’t require you to depend on someone else for a ride.

I can’t give everybody the opportunity to work from home, and I can’t make traffic disappear. But I do think everybody should know what local jobs and nearby jobs are actually available to them.

There may be a better opportunity closer than you think.

Why 1,000 people?

I want to help 1,000 real people find jobs closer to home.

Not 1,000 signups. Not 1,000 searches. Not 1,000 people who opened the job map and never came back.

I want to know that WalkableJobs actually helped 1,000 people find work that made their lives a little better.

That number matters to me because it’s something real you can hold us accountable for. More listings are great if they give people better local choices. More traffic is great if those people actually find what they’re looking for. New features are great if they make it easier for somebody to find and compare jobs near home.

But those things aren’t the mission by themselves.

The mission is helping people.

I don’t know how long it will take us to reach 1,000. I only know that I’ll continue doing what I can to make WalkableJobs better and more useful for the people searching for work.

And 1,000 isn’t the end of the mission. It’s just the beginning.

Putting location back into the job search

With WalkableJobs, I want you to be able to see where a job actually is before deciding whether it works for your life.

Instead of searching through a list of jobs and figuring out the commute afterward, our map-based job search starts with location. You can use the job map to look around your neighborhood and see local employment opportunities that you may not have known were there.

Maybe that’s a retail job in Atlanta a few miles from your house. Maybe it’s a service job around the corner. Maybe you’re looking for hourly jobs near you, part-time jobs near you, jobs accessible by public transit, or jobs you can realistically reach without a car.

Most job boards treat distance to work as an afterthought. I don’t think it should be.

At WalkableJobs, it’s one of the most important things we care about.

Finding a nearby job is only the first step

Seeing that a job is close to home doesn’t necessarily mean it’s easy to get there.

Traffic, public transit schedules, sidewalks, road conditions, shift times, and safety can all change what a commute actually looks like. Two jobs that are the same distance from your house can have completely different commute times.

That’s why distance on a map should be the beginning of the question, not the end of it.

And the closest job isn’t automatically the best job either.

Pay matters. Hours matter. Benefits, stability, growth, and whether you actually want the job all matter. Sometimes a job that’s a little farther away is going to be the better choice.

I don’t want WalkableJobs to make that decision for you. I want it to make the options easier to see.

Our goal is to help you find short commute jobs and compare nearby opportunities while keeping the commute itself as part of the decision.

We’re starting with Atlanta jobs and jobs throughout Georgia, and we’ll continue improving how people can search for work by location as WalkableJobs grows.
