WalkableJobs has a number to answer to: help at least 1,000 people find a job closer to home.

Not 1,000 signups. Not 1,000 searches. Not 1,000 people who opened a map and disappeared. The goal is 1,000 real people finding work that makes the trip between home and the job easier.

That is the mission. Everything else is a way to get there.

A commute takes more than miles

The trip to work is unpaid time that repeats every shift. It can take money for gas, fares, parking, maintenance, or a backup ride. It can decide who handles school pickup, whether dinner happens together, and how much energy is left after getting home.

A job closer to home does not fix every problem at work. It can still give someone back a piece of the day.

That might mean a shorter drive. It might mean one bus instead of three. It might mean a route someone can walk, bike, or manage without asking for a ride. The useful definition of "closer" belongs to the person making the trip.

Why put a number on the mission?

"Help people" is easy to say and hard to judge. One thousand gives WalkableJobs a scoreboard.

It is large enough to matter and small enough to stay personal. Every number in that total represents an actual person whose workday fits their life a little better.

It also keeps the product honest. More listings are useful only if they create better local choices. More traffic is useful only if people find what they need. A feature is useful only if it makes a nearby job easier to discover, compare, or reach.

If something looks impressive but does not help move a person toward a better local job, it is probably not the next thing to build.

Start the search from home

Most job searches begin with a title, company, or city. WalkableJobs begins with the place the trip begins: home.

The map shows jobs by distance from that starting point. Distance is only the first check. A short line on a map does not know about traffic, sidewalks, transfers, hills, late-night service, or the time a shift ends. Those still need to be checked against the real route.

But starting from home changes the question. Instead of asking, "What jobs are somewhere around Atlanta?" someone can ask, "What work is actually near me?"

That is a smaller question with a more useful answer.

What counts as success

The goal is not to push everyone toward the nearest available job. Pay, hours, benefits, safety, stability, management, and room to grow all matter. Sometimes a farther job is the better choice.

Success is giving people a clear view of the nearby options so distance becomes part of the decision before they apply or accept.

The result might be:

• finding the same kind of work at a location closer to home;
• discovering an employer nearby that was missing from a broad search;
• comparing two offers with the commute included, not ignored;
• ruling out a trip that would fall apart after a closing shift; or
• choosing a job that returns enough time or money to make daily life easier.

The person looking for work decides whether the job is better. WalkableJobs should make the local choices easier to see.
